His Eminence Ioachim
Archbishop of Archdiocese of Roman and Bacău

I. BIOGRAPHICAL DATA:

  • He was born on 29 March 1954, to Orthodox  parents Neculai and Anica Giosanu in Sănița commune, county of Neamț. He was the third child in the family (there were eight children – four boys and four girls) and was baptised Ilie.

II. THE FORMATION AND THE PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1961-1969 – he studies at the General School from his native village, Stănița;
  • 1970-1971 – he enters as brother in Sihăstria Monastery from county of Neamț;
  • 1970-1975 – he attends the courses of ”Veniamin Costachi”  Theological Seminary from Neamț Monastery;
  • 1975-1976 – he serves his military service in Plenița, county of Dolj;
  • 1976-1980 – he attends the courses of ”Justinian Patriarhul” Orthodox University Theology Institute of Bucharest. He graduades the faculty with the graduation paper ”Sabatul la cultele neoprotestante și poziția ortodoxă” ( ”The Sabath at Neoprotestant cults and the Orthodox attitude”), under the coordination of the Prof. Deacon Petre David, a lecturer at the Missionary and Ecumenism Cathedra;
  • 1980 – he becomes a monk with  the name Ioachim at Bistrița Monastery, county of Nemț . He is the first to become a monk at that monastery in 40 years. He has Rev. Ioanichie Bălan (his uncle) as monastic god father .
  • 1980-1985 –he works for five years for the restauration work at the Complex from Bistrița Monastery, together with the monastery`s abbot, Rev. Ciprian Zaharia.
  • 1 March 1981 he  is ordained hierodeacon by His Beatitude Arpașu Patriarch of the Roumanian Orthodox Church , Metropolitan of Moldavia and Suceava at that time;
  • 1982 – he is awarded archdeacon by His Beatitude Patriarch Teoctist,  Bistrița Monastery, county of Neamț;
  • 1985 – he is transfered at the Eparchial Centre from Iași, where he fulfills many jobs:
  • first-archdeacon at the Metropolitan Cathedral from Iași, secretary of His Beatitude Patriarch Teoctist;
  • corrector at ”Mitropolia Moldovei și Sucevei” Magazine;
  • 1990 – he becomes the secretary of the new Moldavian Metropolitan, His Eminence Daniel Ciobotea (today the  Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church)
  • 30 December 1990 – he is ordained hieromonk  by His Eminence Daniel, at Văratic Monastery;
  • 1 January 1991 – he is awarded protosingel, at the church service between years, at the Metropilitan Cathedral from Iași;
  • 1991-1994 – he attends the doctor`s degree courses of ”Saint Serge” Institute from Paris, France, under the guidance of the professors Boris Bobrinskoy and Olivier Clement;
  • 1991-1992 –he attends the French courses from Sorbone University;
  • 26 October 1994 – he maintains the doctorate thesis in French, with the title La déification de l'homme d'après la pensèe du Père Dumitru Stăniloae  (in English: “Dumitru Stăniloae` s way of thinking about man`s becoming  God”)
  • 21 June 1998 – he is awarded  archimandrite by His Beatitude Daniel ( at the time, the Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bucovina) for All Saints`Day, the celebration of Bucium Monastery, Iași;
  • at 29 October 1999 – he is elected by the Holy Synod of the  Roumanian Orthodox Church  Assistant  Bishop of the Archdiocese of Roman and Bacău , with the name ”Băcăuanul”;
  • 1 May 2000, the second Easter Day – he is ordained hierarch, fulfilling the job as an assistant bishop of the Diocese of Roman;
  • 13 September 2009 - he becomes Assistant Bishop, together with Diocese’s becoming Archdiocese, with the name: The Archdiocese of Roman and Bacău;
  • 16 December 2014 - he is elected by the Holy Synod of the  Roumanian Orthodox Church Archbishop of Archdiocese of Roman and Bacău;
  • 2000 – up to present time – member of the Theological and Didactical  Commission of the Holy Synod.

III. HIS RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC  ACTIVITY

  1. CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

-in France:

  • he edited ”Rejui-toi” publication (”Enjoy yourself”);
  • he settled and organized ”l’Annonciation” Monastery , Rosiers, Paris (1992);
  • he reorganized the Romanian Archdiocese from Western and Southern Europe, with the headquarters in Paris;
  • he reorganized the first French parish from the Parisian region, parish belonging to the Roumanian spirituality;
  • he adapted for the first time in French the text of the Divine Liturgy by Saint Ioan Gură de Aur, sung in Romanian Byzantine music;
  • he organized in the Parisian region the first Orthodox  pilgrimages at the relics of Saint Mathurin from Larchant (third century);
  • he participated, as a coordinating member of the French Biblical Society, in the creation of two big Bible exhibitions in Paris;
  • he was an active member, as a representative of the French Orthodox Fraternity, in the group for ecumenical  and interreligious dialogue from Paris;
  • he published, in religious magazines, ecumenical articles;
  • he participated in numerous ecumenical meetings, one of the most important being the one from 1998, with the occasion of Journes mondiales de la jeunesse (World Youth Celebration), when over a million youngsters went to Paris;
  • he published a series of theological articles in SOP and Contact newspapers;
  • he got into contact with many famous Roumanian people who were spread in France and worldwide: Paul Barbă Neagră (Director), Gheorghe Zamfir (the famous pan-pipe player), R. Poghire (Roumanian teacher at Sorbone), the priest Virgul Ghiorghiu, Elvira Popescu, Emil Cioran (gave him the last communion on the deathbed), Duiliu Sfințescu (was his confessor). He brought the relics of the great Metropilitan Visarion Puiu, Moldavian Republic’s  exiled metropolitan who had died in a village from Bretagne and who was reburied in Montparnasse Cemetery along with Constantin Brâncuși, Emil Cioran, Virgil Ghiorghiu, Nae Ionescu and Eugen Ionescu;
  • he held five conferences at Sorbone University in which he made known the Orthodoxy under the title: L'Eglise face à la modernité, point de vu orthodoxe (The Church in the face of modernity, Orthodox point of view)
  • he converted to Orthodoxy and confirmed in the Orthodox Church approximately 70 people coming from different religions and confessions.
  • In the country:
  • he set up Philocalia Publishing House (2001);
  • he re-edited the eparchial magazine ”Roman’s Chronicle” (2000)
  • he reactivated  ” Bishop Melchisedec Ștefănescu” Foundation, Roman (2001)
  • he organized ”The Days of the Bishop Melchisedec Ștefănescu” (in 2013 got to the 13th edition);
  • he organized ”The Day of Stănița Commune”
  • he organized conferences, symposiums, synaxis;
  • he organized charity concerts;
  • he set up ”Lazaret” Social and Philantrophic Centre, Bacău;
  • he set up the cultural, social and administrative center ”Saint Pious Antipa from Calapodeşti”, Iteşti;
  • he set up the Religious Products Centre “Saint Pious Dionisie Exigul”, Roman;
  • he set up religious objects  shops: ””Anastasia”, ”Philocalia”, ”Saint Apostle Andrei”;
  • he set up the sewing workshop ”Christ’s Shirt”;
  • he set up the candle workshop ”Saint  Martyr Fotini” Roman;
  • he reorganized and restored the offices from the Eparchial Centre from Roman;
  • he published editorials, articles, studied in different religious newspapers and magazines;
  • he wrote forewords for different books;
  • he participated, as a representative of the Holy Synod, in different ecumenical commissions, symposiums and national and international conferences;
  • as a member of the Theological, liturgical and didactical Commission  of the Holy Synod he wrote or revised the text of the church services of the Saints Canonized  by the Romanian Orthodox Church;
  • he initiated the project for the re-editing of the ”Omnia”Collection, the papers published by the Bishop Melchisedec Ştefănescu;
  • he elaborated the canonization files of the Bishop Melchisedec Ştefănescu and The Pious Irinarh from Horaiţa;
  • he coordinated the volumes published with the occasion of the celebration of 600 years of existence of the Diocese of Roman and Bacău.

V. MISSIONARY AND SOCIAL ACTIVITY

  • he initiates the project ”Let the children come to Me and don’t stop them!”, through which are supported the families with many children, the children who come from under-privileged families and those who have very good school results:
  • he coordinates the social-philanthropic  activity of Melchisedec Stefanescu”Foundation, from Roman, where he founded in 2009: The daily center for children coming from disadvantaged families and ” Melchisedec Stefanescu”Social and Multifunctional Center;
  • he coordinates the social-philanthropic activity from ”Melchisedec Stefanescu”Foundation, the branch from Bacau;
  • he has established and coordinates the activity of ’’Lazaret’’ Social-Philanthropic
  •  Center, running the following services:

- ’’The Saints Cozma and Damian” Daily Center for Autistic People;

- The ”Healing Spring” center for prevention, information, evaluation and counselling for alcohol and other drugs addicts;

- ”Saint Filoftea” daily center for children coming from families with precarious social situation;

- “Saint Gheorghe” center for elderly people;

- The center for counseling, support and information;

- Workshop for occupational therapy;

- Dental cabinet for people with socio-economic problems;

- Excellency center in the development of the human resources;

- Formation center for counselling and conflict mediation;

- he has founded and coordinates the activity of “Righteous Prince Steven the Great” Elderly Center, Hârja;

- he coordinates the activity of over 40 social – philanthropic centers throughout the Eparchy.

VI. NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LITURGICAL AND MISSIONARY ACTIVITIES

Liturgical activities:

  • during 2000-2015

- he officiated 1841 Holy Liturgies;

- he officiated 1658 liturgies for special occasions, sermons and hierurgies;

- he set-up the foundation stone for 94 new churches;

- he reconsecrated 176 churches;

- he consecrated 142 churches;

- he ordained deacon or priest 296 young men;

- he awarded 452 clergy men different honorary ranks;

- he paid canonical visits in those over 550 churches from the Eparchy;

- from 2000, he has directly taken care of the building site of ” Lord’s Ascension”Cathedral from Bacau;

- he participated in interreligious conferences;

- he held the conference with the theme: ”The Orthodox Church and the challenges of the third millenium”, from the series of cultural meetings under the title: ”The Arts’ Autumn at Apollonia University”, Iasi
